Leyla Mafi

 Iran remains the last country that still allows children to be executed.When Leyla was sentenced in 2004 she was in the teen years, and was under the age of eighteen.Tehran confirmed the decision to execute her for having illicit sexual relations. Amnesty International stated she had the mental age of an eight-year-old--the same age at which her mother forced her to become prostitute. According to Amnesty International, Leyla's parents sold her at the age of twelve to an Afghan man to be his "temporary wife". When she was fourteen, her mother-in-law made her go back to prostitutes, and she gave birth to twins in the process. Her birth family sold her to another fifty-five year old married man and he turned her to prostitution. Leyla reportedly gave the birth of her first child at nine years old.While Leyla was in prison in the midst of her execution, the world-renowned human rights journalist and activist Asieh Amini was fighting to get Leyla a lawyer. Despite being a teenager, Leyla could not sign the paperwork that allowed Asieh to hire an attorney on her behalf, so Asieh put ink on her finger and managed to get her to write a signature on the form. Despite her setbacks, she persevered.
