Cassandra Peterson (born September 17 1951) is an American actress from America. She is most famous for her portrayal of the horror hostess character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Peterson became famous in the Los Angeles TV station KHJ-TV as Elvira, her stage character. She was the host of Elvira's Movie Macabre (a weekly B movie show). Peterson is a member of the LA-based sketch comedy and improvisation troupe The Groundlings. Her Elvira persona was partially based on a character resembling a Valley girl she developed as a member of. The popularity of Elvira's Movie Macabre led to the 1988 film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark as well as the film of the same name in 2001 called Elvira's Haunted Hills, both starring Peterson as Elvira. The show returned to television in 2010 and featured Elvira hosting public domain films, and airing on This TV until 2011. Elvira returned as a horror hostess in 2014, with 13 Nights of Elvira, a 13-episode show produced by Hulu, and again in 2021 with a one-night 40th Anniversary Special that aired on Shudder.
